The article speaks about my transition from PC gaming to a console. Hope it helps guys n gals who are yet undecided about a console.(I’ve shamelessly put some affiliates links here and there. Please free to use them!)
History
I vaguely remember how it all started.
My folks had gifted me a PC. Intel PII with a vga card (with a cool 2mb vram!). I had ventured into the software profession, and needed a machine that would help me built my career. It came preinstalled with all the software I needed to start. I’m not sure if it was fate or luck or the vendor’s irritating habit of pleasing his customers, but he put in “some games” in it. And there it all started!! Doom3d, Shadow Warrior, Heretic….! Game On!
Somewhere down the line, my PC lost the main purpose of its existence. Not that my career was hampered by it. I always had my college and diploma institute for that. I fondly remember the Commandos series, and how I would play for hours on end, till my eyes would go sore red. Commandos still remains my favorite till date.As years rolled by my Pc went through a lot of transition, physically. From Vga to a 7900GT. From a 14” Crt to a 22” Lcd. From PII to a E6300. From 32mb ram to 2gb, ddr2, dual channel running at 800 MHz, each. I never fancied myself with cutting edge technology, but did keep myself in the midrange section. And none of my hardware upgrades were based on anything else other than gaming. I never felt the need to play games in their full glory, with 100x antialiasing or 200x anisotropic filtering! Only when the frame rates started to dip and the game became unplayable, I knew I had to get an upgrade.
Mind you, I had considered buying a PS2 in between. But the graphics really didn’t look that pretty. And I was like “Maaan! That sucks! Pc gaming rules!
When the Crysis demo came out (along with the huge hype about Directx 10), I realized I needed the 8800GT. But it was insanely priced at 450-500$! Who the heck, would buy a 500$ graphics card! I mean, people do but that was nothing short of looting. The next “best thing” was the infamous 8600GT, and that seemed like a downgrade to my current 7900. And nvidia had this nasty habit of delaying the release of reasonably priced midrange cards.

The Choice
That’s what got me thinking. Is gaming all about graphics? I’ve played Sherlock Holmes with as much gusto as Doom3. I’ve played GTA1 and 2 when GTA-San Andreas was the talk of the town. So why shouldn’t I try consoles. The whole concept of attaching one to my TV, lying back on the couch, and having a go at the controller suddenly started looking exciting. There was a buzz around about the next gen consoles and I felt like I was ready to get into action. Just like that!!
But it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Just like you get confused between an Intel and an Amd, Nvidia or a Raedon there were two Consoles - Xbox360 and PS3. (Of course, there was the WII too, but it didn’t really excite me as the others) So I opened Google and put in “Xbox 360 or PS3 better”. Boy! What was that!? Each and every page had irrelevant information from fanbots about why the other console sucked!! Who wants to read that? Well after doing a lot of research (took a week) I decided to go with the Ps3. Some of the reasons:
- Blu-ray player
- No RRod
- It was a Sony
- Compatible with Ps2 games
Since I wanted to play Ps2 games I went with the 60GB one. Also, realizing the region restriction for blu-ray dvds would eventually hurt me, I had to go for the NTSC-J. Having made up my mind, I convinced a friend who was coming back from Bangkok, to get me a Ps3.
A 60GB NTSC-J PS3
